The portable external monitor for a laptop is not a solved purchase. What Makes a Great Portable External Monitor for a Laptop
Native DisplayPort Alt Mode, not DisplayLink. A modern portable monitor behaves like an ordinary GPU-connected display when the host carries DisplayPort video over USB-C — no driver, no software layer, no added latency. DisplayLink is a different technology: it encodes the desktop over a USB data connection and requires a driver, which is why it appears in docks and in older hybrid-signal products rather than in the current DP Alt Mode models below. The check is on the laptop side: "USB-C" describes a connector shape, not a capability. A port can be charge-only, charge-and-data, or charge-data-and-video, and only the last one drives a screen.
Power is the second half of the video path. One-cable operation requires four things at once: a host port with video output, a video-capable cable, a monitor that accepts video and power on the same connector, and enough wattage for the brightness and refresh rate you selected. Typical portable IPS panels draw around 5–15 W while a 4K OLED panel can pull roughly 23 W, and a laptop's own USB-C output is often the tightest constraint. HDMI carries video, never power. A mini-HDMI input is what makes a portable monitor usable with a PS5, an Xbox, a docked Switch or an older laptop that has no display-capable USB-C port. Rated brightness is not measured brightness. Manufacturer figures describe a best case, and portable panels frequently miss them. Gamut coverage and gamut volume are different numbers. "107% sRGB" and "151% sRGB" are volume figures; "100% DCI-P3" and "99% sRGB" are coverage figures. Volume above 100% says nothing about accuracy. For photo and video work, the meaningful triplet is coverage percentage, color depth, and whether anyone has measured the panel independently.
Touch is a platform feature, not a panel feature. Windows exposes a compatible touchscreen as a standard USB HID device and generally just works. macOS does not provide a system-wide touch model for external displays, so a Mac needs vendor middleware — ViewSonic vTouch on the TD1656-2K, espresso's software stack on the 17 Pro.
