Power topology decides the brightness you actually get

The single most important number on a portable OLED isn't on the spec sheet. A monitor can negotiate DisplayPort Alt Mode perfectly and still cap its output because the host laptop can't supply enough wattage. Independent testing of the UPERFECT GR14BU recorded roughly 398 nits of SDR brightness when the display ran from an external supply — and only about 138 nits when it was powered solely from a laptop's USB-C port. Same panel, same cable, less than half the light.

That is not a defect. It's how USB Power Delivery budgeting works: the monitor draws what it needs first, and the rest — if anything — goes back to the host. High brightness on an emissive panel costs more power than an equivalent LCD, which is why UPERFECT itself warns that the GR16HQ may need a separate power source even with USB-C video connected. Treat three configurations as distinct purchases: host-powered (one cable, brightness varies), externally powered (full output, two cables), and PD pass-through (a charger feeds the monitor, the monitor passes power to the laptop or handheld). For handheld consoles, the third is the only configuration that reliably gives you a bright screen and a charging battery at the same time.

Burn-in coverage is a warranty question, not a panel question

Every OLED portable shares the same exposure: hours of static interface elements — IDE sidebars, menu bars, taskbars, spreadsheet grids — accumulate uneven wear. What separates the products is what the manufacturer will do about it. ASUS is unusually explicit on two ZenScreen OLEDs: the MQ16AHE and the MQ17QH both carry three-year warranty language that names panel burn-in. ViewSonic takes the opposite contractual position across its US monitor warranty and excludes damage from long-displayed static imagery. UPERFECT publishes two-year coverage with no burn-in clause either way; Acer's three-year terms don't mention it; INNOCN's refurbished stock carries twelve months.

Silence is not the same as exclusion, but it's also not coverage. If you're going to run a static desktop on an OLED for eight hours a day, buy the model whose paperwork says what happens next.

HDR certification and HDR signal support are different things

A panel that accepts an HDR10 signal and switches to an HDR picture mode has not demonstrated high-dynamic-range performance. VESA's DisplayHDR tiers carry actual evidentiary weight. Among portables, ASUS's ZenScreen Duo OLED MQ149CD carries DisplayHDR 400 True Black, the Fold OLED MQ17QH carries DisplayHDR 500 True Black, and the ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED is documented at DisplayHDR 500 without the True Black modifier. Most other models list HDR10 support and nothing further — and UPERFECT's own current parameter table for the GR14BU says HDR: No, despite the OLED marketing language that surrounds the category.

Practical rule: on a 250–400 nits conventional panel, expect convincing contrast in dark content and limited headroom in bright scenes. Where HDR genuinely showed up in independent measurement was the VX1655, which was measured at 457 nits SDR and above 500 nits in HDR highlights.

Subpixel layout decides whether text looks clean

Desktop QD-OLED monitors built a reputation for color fringing on small text, and that reputation gets wrongly transplanted onto portables. Layouts differ by model and most manufacturers don't publish them. ViewSonic is the outlier in documenting its structure: the VX1655-4K-OLED uses an AMOLED-type LTPS active matrix with RGB vertical-stripe subpixels, and the ColorPro VP16-OLED uses RGB stripe as well. Refresh rate only pays off if your source can feed it

A 120 Hz portable is a genuine improvement for scrolling, cursor motion and compatible games. It does not make a console output 120 Hz if the console caps lower, and it does not guarantee Adaptive-Sync — the Arzopa Z1FC was specifically reported without it.
